Conor McGregor and John Cena are as similar as they are different. The Irishman has long been regarded as the face of the UFC, at least regarding the promotion’s roster of fighters. Meanwhile, John Cena was the face of WWE for well over a decade prior to finally being supplanted by Roman Reigns.

Despite their similarities, the two men operate in different worlds. McGregor is a professional mixed martial artist, while Cena is a professional wrestler. In the wake of the UFC’s parent company, Endeavor acquiring WWE, fans have taken to social media to create memes out of the situation.

WWE and UFC plan to merge, forming a new publicly listed company. It will be led by Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel as CEO, with Vince McMahon as executive chairman.

While some have joked about a loser-leaves-town match between UFC president Dana White and WWE executive chairman Vince McMahon, another match comes to mind. While some fans might not know about it, Conor McGregor and John Cena have history.

When Conor McGregor trash-talked John Cena

Back in 2016, Conor McGregor was coming off a stunning upset loss against future ‘BMF’ claimant Nate Diaz. Ahead of his rematch with Stockton’s finest, ‘The Notorious’ held a press conference where he launched an infamous verbal assault on ‘The Leader of the Cenation’.

“What’s the main guy? John Cena. He’s 40. He’s 40 years of age. He’s walking around in a luminous orange T-shirt and a headband talking about nobody can see him. We can see him right there. He’s a big, fat, 40-year-old failed Mr. Olympia motherf*cker.”

Now that WWE and the UFC are together. We need a John Cena and Conor McGregor face to face. Long term booking, brother 😂

Given the Irishman’s past statements, a potential match between the two makes sense. McGregor recently bulked up to a considerable degree and Cena is a part-timer. WWE is no stranger to spectacles, and a potential blockbuster match between the two men at next year’s WrestleMania would be a hot-seller.

The trash talk in the buildup between the two masters of the mic would be legendary. After all, the Irishman has already had a crossover bout before with Floyd Mayweather Jr., so why not one with John Cena?
